Revival of a "superstar"

One of the key moments in the Academy Award nominated film Juno is a discussion about the value of a version of the song "Superstar" by legendary art-punk band Sonic Youth. The song has a history nearly as fascinating as the film itself.

"Superstar" was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. It was inspired by a suggestion from Rita Coolidge that they write a song from the perspective of a groupie. Rita Coolidge has said that rock legend Eric Clapton was the specific inspiration. When Richard Carpenter, of the brother and sister group the Carpenters, heard the song, he says that he instantly thought it could be a hit and would be perfect for the Carpenters.

The subject matter of "Superstar" may seem somewhat unusual for a mainstream act like the Carpenters. However, with Karen Carpenter's voice, the tone of melancholy in the song was emphasized in gripping fashion. It was not their biggest hit, but "Superstar" reached #2 on the pop singles chart and has been strongly tied to the duo ever since.

In 1994, a tribute album to the Carpenters titled If I Were a Carpenter featured a version of "Superstar" by the band Sonic Youth (pictured). This recording has been both treasured and reviled by fans of the band. After 14 years, the film Juno has pulled the recording out of obscurity and made it the subject of discussion for another generation of music fans.

"Superstar" has gone on to have life in numerous other cover versions. Perhaps most notable of these is a version by Luther Vandross. Usher also recorded the song in a tribute to Luther, and "Superstar" was a key performance by American Idol champion Ruben Studdard.

Adeona : Laptop Thieves Beware

Adeona is the first Open Source system for tracking the location of your lost or stolen laptop that does not rely on a proprietary, central service. This means that you can install Adeona on your laptop and go — there's no need to rely on a single third party. What's more, Adeona addresses a critical privacy goal different from existing commercial offerings. It is privacy-preserving. This means that no one besides the owner (or an agent of the owner's choosing) can use Adeona to track a laptop. Unlike other systems, users of Adeona can rest assured that no one can abuse the system in order to track where they use their laptop.

Adeona is designed to use the Open Source OpenDHT distributed storage service to store location updates sent by a small software client installed on an owner's laptop. The client continually monitors the current location of the laptop, gathering information (such as IP addresses and local network topology) that can be used to identify its current location. The client then uses strong cryptographic mechanisms to not only encrypt the location data, but also ensure that the ciphertexts stored within OpenDHT are anonymous and unlinkable. At the same time, it is easy for an owner to retrieve location information.

How do you use it?

Using Adeona only requires downloading and installing a small software client. Adeona is free to use.

Why Adeona?

With the growing ubiquity of, and user reliance on, mobile computing devices (laptops, PDAs, smart phones, etc.), loss or theft of a device is increasingly likely, disruptive, and costly. Internet-based tracking systems provide a method for mitigating this risk. These tracking systems send, over the Internet, updates regarding the current location of the device to a remotely administered repository. If the device is lost or stolen, but maintains Internet connectivity and unmodified software, the tracking system can keep tabs on the current whereabouts of the device. This data could prove invaluable when the appropriate authorities attempt to recover the device.

Unfortunately, with current proprietary tracking systems users sacrifice location privacy. Indeed, even while the device is still in the rightful owner's possession, the tracking system is keeping tabs on the locations it (and its owner) visit. Even worse, with some commercial products, even outsiders (parties not affiliated with the tracking provider) can "piggy-back" on the tracking system's Internet traffic to uncover a mobile device user's private information and/or locations visited.

But if you're not as important that FBI wants to seek you out go ahead and try it ...I have too..you want to get your hands onto anyone who tries to rob you off your lappy , dont you ??

“Cool”

Coolness in everything is time based occurrence. It is very difficult to say what is cool, more difficult than predicting earthquakes. Cool as in the appreciation or expression of being good, good NOT best. Many things can be cool, correction many antagonistic things can be cool; some at different instances of space time and some together.

Also coolness is a very endemic trait. What may be cool somewhere may be a taboo some place else. I am not talking about geographical places here, it may be any user/consumer/practitioner
group/sub-group/hypothetical set of thoughts, people or cultures.

Now, we may also reach a point where we ask what can be cool, YOU can be cool or nothing can be cool ! A “thing” can be cool or an action or mannerism (thingy) or just the absence of the same. If you can make anyone believe that it exists (other than you of course) then it can be cool or the opposite.
Depends on how you think about it. When many of us were young, imaginary friends were cool. They don't exist but still they were cool.

How to make something cool? Million dollar question half of the people working on the web 2.0/3.0 and many many more in the Hollywood will pay through their noses to know this answer. Not the answer I am sharing right now but a … hypothetical...actually true answer. The best way and the most easiest way to do this is to make others believe it is cool. This is by assumption that you can make other people believe. Many times being cool yourself (in the eyes of others) helps but being totally uncool may also help. How? …. lets see if you are totally uncool and you dont do the thing then it is not uncool , hence cool.

Many of us might be locked in an unending cycle of trying to be (make) cool. By the time we end up doing cool things they aren't cool anymore. I will not comment on this. I will just say this blog is going to be cool.

Yes I might add that, if you'd tried hard enough cant reach the “cool” state try making it “hot” or “good shit”.

2 Months in SID

It hardly seems like two months now that its over but there have been times where evry hour seemed more than two years especially those wen you are forced to make 13 shades of grey with paint , something which i still maintain is better left to computers !!
I think i still have to adapt a lot to the institute, among the whassups , sups and howdies of my fellow students somewhere apurv ray of 2003 has surfaced again i wont rule that out as entirely bad but apurvrdx isnt entirely happy with it ! I need to experiment more with my surroundings particularly when i have a top of the line dell laptop with me . The more i try to escape the assignments the more they strangle me with monotony and boredom.
I have just started with Autodesk Max 9 32 bit and would like to tell you all to kee an eye on optickarma for further updates in 3d wizardry ... allthough i wont say theyll be spectacular from the begginning , you might have to look at hundreds of baic shapes before you could actually see a render equivalent to my photoshop works !
And an announcement i will be stating a podcast , when , thats a bit controversial but i can surely say it'll be soon fairly soon , atleast soon from my standards of laziness. Right now i am on a preparator mission for RGB 2007 an event organised by NID ahmedabad ... the evnts camera buff ie a short film competition ... ah i can see you guys stuck in engineering colleges getting jealous but dont worry ill give you enough of it on my forthcoming episodes of podcasts !! till that time ill give you a task lets see how many are up for it .. suggest names for my podcast , it has to be contemporary and somewhere connected to the field of design , althoughit ll be a diversified podcast not dedicated to design alone !!

Scholars and their Folly

I was in a foul mood when i stumbled upon the website of this competition about a couple of months back... I cant really recollect the reason why but i was pretty pissed off. Then came this barage of questions some of which seemed shamefully simple and some were abyssimally dificult. Clicking at will I completed it the first time in about 34 minutes or so ...and then i saw that i was allowed to give thrice in the next 24 hours ... I decided to try my luck and ventured into the sme co-ordinates of cyber-space ..... what came next left me speechless ..exactly the same questions with their order changed....!!!!

So this time I used the mouse as a rail gun firing off answers at break neck speed..and whoosh i completed it in less than four minutes..and that after taking half a minute for the communication latency between my pc and the server !

The next round was a bit of surprise ..although i knew this was a reality show i didnt think that they would film this round too. But that was proved wrong no sooner than i entered the registration area ... Huge placards or display boards proclaimed the sponsors as well as the Cardiff university was showcasing their finest mugshots ....lol. Of course i wasnt prepared for my first television appearance.... I was this scrawny chum with stubble growing like moss ver my face ... i wont be surprised if the eyes roll off my presence in the show.

I AM Back , (now dont cry please !)

First of all a heartfelt apology for being off the blogging circuit for so long , you see i was busy with the pernucopia of of options that daunt every indian teenager after his 12th standard exams and then an unforseen accident that nearly putAcromantula to a sorry state of comma or actually worse a permanent slumber. But as long as apurvrdx wants he will keep any piece of demented hardware alive (sorry acromantula that was not for you !)

So i have spanking new processor and a motherboard which i believe has a better bus architecture and thus ASUS wins over MSI ! processor is still the same old AMD 64 3000+ sheesh!!

So now onto the real deal , I am in ahmedabad !! yay (apurvrdx singles a jingle and then dances putting both justin timberlake and prabhudeva to shame!) And i am here because i got through in the NID written test (does the same thing and the ceiling starts crumbling ) okay so no more dancing !! The place is phenomenal , i mean after travelling on " 'crater'saurus " infested roads of mumbai , the roads here seem to be of an elven demeanour i mean if someone can skateboard its here !! yeahi see you getting the point and yes theres no derath of malls and all as i had miscontructed perception kept projecting. Also i mad a journey closest to an airline ravel well it was India's TGV class the Shatabdi Express and boy oh boy this was great !! But before that ill have to tell you the conspiracies of the greast indian railways to keep me away from this beautiful place !!

Lets start at 3 45 am IST i got and got ready waiting for the ricshaw wala to pick me up and till 4 o clock there was no sign of any three wheeler !!so i hastened onto my activa my mom in tow andputting the relatively small bag of mine in the front i startedtowards the railway station ,i reachedthere well in time for my 4 16 local but then the railways werent giving up that easy !!

The bloody *&^&^ local didnt budge till 4 35 and then the fucking announcement comes that this train has been cancelled and please move onto platform no 5 for he 4 38 train no w if youd know the shatabdi waves the mumbai central off at 635 and it doesnt stop at dadar !! i know thats cruel but !! thethe 4 38 trains starts crawling to wards its destination and drops me off at the dadar station at 6 04 man , i run with the luggage across the mamothbridge intermittently fumbling because of the oncoming rush and finally catch the churchgate local at 6 10 seconds before its motors roar into life!! then i reach mumbai central and literally sprint up the foot-ower-bridgeo catch shatabdi getting inside it ust 116 seconds before it departs !!
Now if thats not a journey just tell me one !!

anyways today i have a date , a date with NID , yeah ill go to the campus , check outhe dayime emperature , the exten of sunburn that is perpetuaed by this ahmedabadi sun and also checkout a fundoo icecream parlour ive heard of now thats a great plan dontcha think !!

Yes Windows Vista is here with a bang but its gonna cost us every single penny that Microsoft has put in over the last 5 years. Personally i am not too exited about jumping on to this new software cause india will have to wait a long long time for new appsfer this OS also a vista enabled PC here costs atlest twice as much a normal PC so Vista will have to wait, by the way my PC is vista ready but the other cost that entail are way to much at this juncture so the 15000 i will have to shell out are better of in a Mutual Fund than this new (read incomplete!!) OS .
but it 'll still have the apurvrdx recommends tag for those who have the deep pockets !!

SEXING UP KBC

The first episode of KBC went on air today and i would say its not bad actually not bad at all, Shahrukh khan has it all wrapped up in his charisma and his metrosexual jittery-titteries !! His own blog says it all i mean heres a web savvy host and a snippet Shahrukh Khan was the first person in mumbai to own an internet connection at home!! picked this up from one of his interviews.
The most hilarious thing was his act of giving nicknames to the contestants So some venkatesh puttu became venky and a gugguli became guggi !! He was really pissed off him i guess cause he said he didnt like films or filmstars and then he pops out the name of George Clooney , sure a looney little contestant by the way what the fu%^ was stars selection team thinking of while taking in this hominid deprived of all entertainment in his life !! who the hell doesnt know that a red coin in the game of carrom is called a queen !! he was calling it a king !! hmmmm i think its part of an ad gimmick. What he was really trying to do was advertising his skill in gender change operations, someone give bobby darling his name please and yes whatever you wanna pronounce it please dont denounce it as GUGGI !!

I think i would see a couple of more episodes of this new avataar of KBC for amitabh bachans sake and maybe if I find it good enough ill continue fer the metrosexuals sake i meant shahrukh btw. so ciao and yes please dont give nicknames to people who dont understand what you are really doing poor little venky i mean Venkatesh Putty ;-)

Illusion

We don’t have the power of foresight says the bond. The bond within us and the bond around us, the bond which restricts our thoughts. We can say we know something only when we have an external source of reassurance. That is precisely the point of origin of this write-up. Come delve into this thought.
We can all describe the location of an element if we know the origin of system wherein the element is embedded. Here dimensions play an almost undeniable role of confusing us. Remember ‘almost’ and ‘confusing’. Almost because we may consider dimensionless entities too. Confusing because dimension may be implicit or explicit (implicit means depending on some other factor and explicit means independently valid).
Now to the point we come back (that’s so yoda!!) Consider the following situation –

The element does not exist and still we try to locate it in the system containing infinite explicit dimensions supporting exponentially increasing implicit dimensions.
Or (any one)

The element doe not exist and still we try to locate it in the system containing infinite implicit dimensions and just one explicit function that is the presence of that element.

Now,

Would you consider the system to be real if the object doesn’t/cant/will not and /or the implicit dimension will be present??

The answer is simple. The answer is the element we are trying to locate. It is present although it cannot and if you understand the core of Boolean please ignore the prefetch of knowledge in your brain.

Thing is that its all in the head and if the head is real everything else is. If you think you can comprehend and emulate the above thought please try to think of another example! Come on exemplify!!

p.s. Do you think you can locate anything if you know that the origin doesn’t exist? If everything else is relative to this point the space is just an “illusion”.

I have been contacted by cadbury india ltd and they told told me that this freakin piece of chocolate is fit fer consumption they say that this chocolate s some thin fuc#$%^ heat etc etc but i dont care i will be testing it and consumer courts the wy i am thinking i should go to so as of now cadbury says its not fungus but my heart still says no it might as well be any ways i am not gonna believe that this is not a manufacturing defect !! so my friends please help me win against this giant company send this page/ its news to as many as possible !!

This is a real incident which happened a couple of days ago in a suburb of mumbai named kalyan. I purchased a pack of cadbury's perk home pack which contains 6 bars i opened one of them and was going to take bite when i saw some thing white on the chocolate first i thought it might be a new flavour of perk but this 17 year old junior scientist's (i won gold medal in homi bhabha junior scientist competition ) brain thought otherwise and forced him to take a closer look which totally shocked him as on the chocolate was an entire colony of fungii (if you didnt know what that creepy thing in the pictures is!!). i have contacted the indian express group and cadbury and have already lodged a police complaint . lets wait and see what happens.
Ill keep you posted !!! And yes this doesnt mean youd stop eating choclates coz i still will eat my sahre of fresh unadulterated or non-alive chocolate lol!!!!!

Italy win the 2006 Football World Cup in what can be called a clincher of a shootout.
The match started with a big scare ,collision between Thiery Henry and Cannavaro and within seconds of it France got a penalty kick which is a different stor alltogether!

Then matterazzi's brilliantly headed past Barthez to define the scoreline that was to be in regular time, then a drought of goals there were close calls but all were blank calls lol.

The shootouts were action packed and all of the Italians fired on target ,well even the french players sans tre..... whatever that sob is pronounced or spelled as said by Mrs.Kher in HUM TUM" zabaan hi tedi kar deti hai"

All around a very good excuse to reach the classes late in the morning expires tomorrow , Damn they have so many stadiums I'd like to see the world cup in only one ground yeah thats more feasible in INDIA.

Superman returns very good results to my theory which its film-makers were testing no picture other than Return Of The Jedi of the STAR WARS league is worth the price you pay at the movie theaters
Frankly speaking the film has very little of the [super{ super ( superman ) }] should have done , and why do these hypocrite ( read superheroes) dont go the omnipresent noble prize winners or is that they know or even further recognise the " pulitzer "
Well i can only say that superman returns is as good as 2 hours spent in a spanish library when even english seems to be problem { you ' super ' writers please collaborate with sci-fi colleagues your pictures need to have more than just 'nostalgia' !
And by the way did anyone notice the planes nose was hollow man what do they take when i am sent in front of the temperatures they face my nose is as full as a bottle of jam newly opened !!!

The Dumbest town Metroplis

I was just scrambling through the chanels during a break in the brazil vs FRANCE match when a very bold icon of india, a female said superman is great as he doesn't wear a mask! I ignored it at the first instance but later gave it a little thought what i think is that metopolis where superman is supposed to be living is the dumbest city ever concieved by humankind if they cant recognise clark kent with this handsome body and face as superman they cant distinguish between butter and cheese either ( if you just said butter and chese whats the bloody difference please , this article is not fer you) ahem yes so people at smallville well small brains = smallville population but metropolis they have to be smarter than this !!

     Mahabharata 2 ? no it is the paradox that rules India where education is mere pawn in the hands of the powerful few, where a mocking bird dies of humiliation and shame is exiled for being indecent in character. The same place where bread can be eaten with blood if it give you better chance to survive in the jungle for the rule of the jungle is live to kill or be killed for living !

     And in such environment if one has to fight against superhuman entities that have  reserved quotas because they had to face atrocities in the last millennia then it’s a condition worst than that of a bacterium that has to oxidize shit to survive in this bad mad world.

     I also listen to those who try to justify it, they are the ones who accept cash under the table to give admissions for the seats reserved in the backward classes. The present condition is that barring select few elite institutions the government is unable fill up the existing quota of the so called deprived classes. Then they play the political gimmick of increasing the quota and justify it saying the upliftment of these classes of society is the part of the objectives of the Constitution of India.

     By my personal experience I say today the reservations should be done away with along with the need of identifying ones caste so that everyone has a level playground rather than giving the mediocre and below average a platform to rule over the rest by virtue of their birth. India needs o get out of the Mandal effect !

     Now, do you find yourself lucky to be born in the machine age, do you? Just turn around the dusty pages of time and you’ll find it all – all that you’ve ever coveted for, those-must –take-a-glimpse at least hamlets , no barking bosses , no quotidian workload ,no acrimonious peers ,no ringing cell phones and junk mails , no irksome traffic et al. All that you envy lied in their closets (read: ancestors).
     The age we live in is doubtlessly a sophisticated one and our machine civilization may soon initiate a crusade against the Almighty Himself in its insatiable thirst to trounce the fundamentals of Mother Nature but the edged sword dangling over our heads cannot be ignored. Dallying with nature is as good as inviting forces of annihilation for supper and that is exactly what the social animals seem to have done in past couple of centuries.
     All the glitz that the Google driven generation sports only forms the surface of this otherwise bleak and hypocritical society. In contrast, our ancestors actually mastered the art of living; they had a very good idea of their limits and never dared to tamper with them. They knew that a sleep can only be earned after a hard days work and eventually – they were satisfied.
     We crave for the ‘moolah’ but ultimately turn towards the spiritual gurus for gaining tranquility (which some dub as ‘Nirvana’). We have ‘it all’ but we are bereft of ‘it’.  And as ever polemical Irish author Oscar Wilde put it, “We know the price of everything, but know the value of nothing.”
     We’ve got what we craved for but have lost all we’ve had. It’s high time we try and get back to our roots or else verisimilitude of happiness will betray us at some part of lives.
     I pen all this rubbish to convince you, and if at the end of it you still feel lucky to be born in machine age – man you’re impossible!

Stilted Repercussions

[This dialogue was primarily written by me keeping in mind the two speakers to be an adolescent and his reflection, but later I thought that it has near universal application when the two speakers are compliment to each other in any manner, even inanimate objects can be personified and its you to explore more, do leave some e.g. you think would be apropos here!!!]

[Boy] “Oh! Sorry in the absence of a luminous agent I wasn’t able to fathom your intention as well as your mood.”

[Reflection] “Don’t worry you’ll soon find out what’s wrong with you , maybe you should try filing your nails ,you read it yesterday didn’t you, it will make your mood a little sunny !”

“I might have done that but the sudden engulfment of my stimulus with an undulating; perfectly even darkness doesn’t help the cause in anyway.”

“ I dare say that it is not the darkness that’s bothering you but the emotional void that has suddenly conjured up inside you , however small it is you think but when your state of mind enters that void the dimensions lose their meaning and so does the ‘moolah’ you humans keep collecting”

“ What do you mean ‘you humans’ you are one of them you reflect what I tend to be , momentarily”

For centuries together, man, the most tyrannous of all the intelligent beings ever spawned on the face of this earth has bent the rules of nature by the most powerful of all the forces that has altered the course of time and space, his will-power.

     The dictionary limits this phenomenal paradigm as the mental power to control and direct your thought and actions, the determination to do something despite difficulties or obstacles, but the magnitude of this paradigm lies not in its meaning but in its inertial effect that instead of taking us away from the path takes to our goal, the very need of that path.

     Will power gives us the positive energy to do anything that we think must be accomplished; actually willingness to do something is the first step towards the accomplishment of an objective.

     Man has not always been successful in his endeavors and has more than often faced the mocking face of failure and defeat, if he would have given up cursing his ill fate we wouldn’t be sitting in a room which has an artificial system of air circulation that helps man in homeostasis and ultimately his existence on earth. Man wouldn’t have even dreamed of flying if he did not have the will to do so. Even in the most difficult of times the enduring power of “human will” has overcome the critical comments of the sadists and the cynics. Only after years and years of failure does man come across an epoch making invention or discovery that changes the way it sees himself as well as his stimulus . It is this symbiosis between his hope and the averse that gives man the energy to continue and this time-beaten elixir us what we call the will-power.

     The logic said, “Any mater that exceeds the density of air would never be able to float in air, leave alone traveling through it.” If man was to be devoid of what we call resolve airplanes would never have seen the light of the day. Even today man continues in his unending exploration of his surrounding. What people term science fiction today may turn into reality tomorrow or it may have even been tested to be only rejected as unpractical. But sooner or later mans will power will add another dimension to his foresight, his knowledge and may be then he will find that exploration starts not from the surrounding but from within himself and also that it’s as infinistimal as his will power.

     Perhaps these lines from the legend Henry David Thoreau succinctly put the essence and derivatives of will-power:

          “I know of no more encouraging fact
          than the unquestionable ability of man
                         to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.”
